Gloves in television

Hey everyone,

I haven't written a glove bog post in a while, so I thought I'd throw in a new on here.

I've talked about, in the past, how I'm disappointed in the decline in glove wearing over the years. It seems they just go more and more out of fashion. Even at the most formal of events, there's usually no one wearing gloves. You can see this decline mirrored in television as well. Award shows are a great example, but aside from that, just any show that has a "formal" event in it, you can catch that too.

It seems science fiction shows tend to make the most interesting use of gloves, most notably the show Farscape. A brilliant show, in my opinion, and a show that had some great costuming in it. In the later seasons they added a character that wore shoulder length leather gloves all the time, was very nice to watch. She was one of those "sexy evil" type characters so it was more to pull off a kind of space "biker chick" look.

The other times you do see gloves, is when there are flash backs to the early 1900, usually '20s-'30s seem to be the frequent time periods when gloves are used liberally.  I had recently introduced a friend to Doctor Who, and very long running British television show, and there was a recent episode with the Titanic involved. This episode is a little tricky to explain, so I'll skip all the details, but it was a "future" version of the Titanic doing a "historical" voyage in space.. Hope that's clear as mud. Anyway everyone was dressed in period clothing, sorta, and most of the women in the background were wearing gloves.

Also the newer, musical version of "The Producers" has lots of lovely glove sightings, and is a funny move to boot.

So gloves are still making their rounds in televisions, not so much in the main stream aspect, but they're still there. Fashion trends seem to come around, I have my fingers crossed that this is one of them.
